meeting of the women of Redcliff was held last Friday afternoon. in the Empress Theatre.
The Women’s Civic Improvement Society of Redeliff was formed with Miss - Failes, as Presidenti; Mrs. Lydiatt, Vice-President ; Mrs. F, F. Woodcock, Secretary ; Mrs, J, W. Wheeler, Treasurer,
The object of the Society is to beautify the town in every way possible—planting the parks, school- grounds ete,., and encouraging priv- ate enterprises in gardening and tidying. It will take a lot of work and patience before much improve- ment shows, but there will be great results in the end.
Every woman is urged to come and bring their ideas to the next meeting which will be held in Crow’s hall on Monday July the 7th at 3 o'clock. ;
The interest taken by the fifty odd ladies in Redeliff in the forma- tion of the Civic. Improvement So- ciety is only compatible. with the spirit of Redcliff’s progress, and shows that the women are fully equal to the occasion and are not to ‘be distanced by the male boosters in the work .of hastening the day when Redeliff will attain that first mark of her goal—the initial stand- ard of cleanliness and beauty that will serve as a pacemaker for future residents to follow.
The next meeting of the society,
DANELZ AND STEPLER WENT ON MONEY QUEST Augurs Well, Considering Money Market---Inquiries About Redcliff.
Mayor E. C. Danelz returned trom Winnipeg Monday morning and announces that he secured a temporary drawing account on the Royal Bank to the amount of $30,000. Mr. Danelz had but one day in the Manitobé*city, and in company with Mr. A. A. Stepler,
had to make some quick moves to

Danelz and Mr. Stepler made a quick — connection for a summer resort point fifty miles north of Winnipeg, where they put the matter flatly up toa Roya) Bank]. official, who gave them the assur- ance of the stated drawing account.’
‘In the face of the fact that Van- éouver’s city credit is nil, as well: as the fact that withdrawals: of banking support have been made in a number of western Canadian. Cities, due to the money stringency, the backing ‘accorded Redeliff’s representatives speaks strikingly well for the town. Debentures of the coast cities are understood to be a drug on the financial market at the present time.
The moneys guaranteed by the Royal Bank through the offices of Mr. Stepler, will be used to meet current expenses of the city’s de- partments. Mr. Danelz says that the water tank was last reported | by wire at Portal and should arrive most any day. The erection of the]. tank will be hastened on its arrival. It will have three-fifths of the capacity of the present storage tank in the Hat, ora total of 300,000
even greater enthusiasm than that evinced at the Jast, and every wo- inan resident of every class is urged tG come out and take part. a
Women’s ideas are of a different sort and often niore original, and therefore their ideas put . into ex- ecution with the practical aid of the men should be equally if not more productive of results than an or- ganization of men formed for the |same purpose.
Co- -operation is the key note of success in anything and the civie improvement movement lays open a field for the joint efforts of the men, women and children; captained by thé women already leagued for that
purpose.
CALGARY FIRM BUILDS IN BROUGHTON PARK

Mr. Danelz says that he heard a great many inquiries in Winnipeg concerning Redcliff, there being more, in fact, than about any other : city in the west. The Stoner Agency there reports a great many inquries.

at an end.
Let us hope that it is true. For an hundred years Canada has been at peace with the United States, except for some bounpary disputes that huve been amicably adjusted. Then why should we father a great navy, such as our Premier, in what seems contradiction’ to his expressed prayers, is recom- mending? Why should we not clamp the lid on that adage “In time of peace prepare for war’? Why should we burden the strugles of the living under a mountain of tribute to the dogs of war? What is it all for? Who have we to fear?
Only the yellow races are a possible foe, and the hazard of a conflict with them is magni- fied. They are powerless to cope with the English speaking races leagued against them in enforced place. And the amal- gamation of the white races in accepted peace among them- selves involves but a small war protection from each against the raids across the Pacfic.
Twentieth century methods of communication and transit which have leveled the barriers of hatred caused by people living within themselves with imaginary wrongs to right against their neighbors, the spreading of the English people to every corner of the globe, and the. near stage of universality of the English languaye—this combination, wrought in a century, has brought within range that millenium of peace of which the dreamers have dreamed for countless ages,
The time is at band when brother will not again take the blood of brother on apposing lines. The huge injustice and travesty of it on all principles of hamanity is begining to dawn on us. Then why in the namo of sanity and common sense should we support a

Canada’s National holiday of Tuesday was observed in splen- did style ay Medicine Hat, Red- cliff evidently having appreci ated the preparations made by the Hatters by sending down ull who intended to celebrate in any way. The Hat had a program on Victoria. Day. but Redcliff outdid her efforts and drew quite a patronage from the neighboring town. If the towns could get together and agree on a sort of reciprocal way of observing the two holli- days, whereby they would alternate and relieve them- selves of the big expense of preparing a program for each day, complete and elaborate enough to attract large crowds the results, both financially and

Build Your Home of Brick--IT’S ECONOMY
True economy not anly takes in the first cost but the cost that is to come. Brick houses of average con- struction cost but a few dollars more than lumber or
_ Stucco,—say $150, on a g3,500 house. But when they ‘are erected cost stops. There are no repairs to be ‘figured on, There is no painting to be counted in every
3 or4 years. There is no depreciation in price,—-con- , sequently your house Will sell for what it cost you, plus . the inerease of the value of your lot in the meanwhile. There is a reduction in the insurance rate of 37} per vent over concrete or stucco and more than 50 per cent over lumber, There isa reduction in fuel bills because brick keeps out the frost in winter, There is comfort in summer because brick keeps ont. the heat. And above all you can borrow more money from your bank on a brick house ten years after itis constructed than you can on a lumber or conerete of the same value in the same period of time, When yon build, build for true economy, ' .

Preserving Fence Posts From Decay
Wood-rot, in all its forms, is due to the action of fungi working under sult- able air and moisture conditions, In fence posts these conditions are most favorable at or near the surface of the ground and hence it is there that de- cay first starts. Some woods, like the cedar and tamarack,. are more resistant to fungus attack and may last, as fence posts, from eight to ten years. Unfortunately however,
plying preservatives to the common nondurable woods which grow in his own wood lot. As the latter alter- native is not only cheaper, but also’ much more effective, it is ot consider- able economic interest to the farmer to know how these wood-preserva- tives are applied.
Creosote, a dead ofl of coal tar, fs perhaps the best preservative for this purpose, as It does not dissolve out of the treated wood, when in contact with moist earth It costs from eight to fifteen cents per gallon.
There are two methods of applying the creosote but. before elther method can be applied it is necessary to have the posts well seasoned if the best re- sults are desired. This seasoning is best accomplished by peeling the bark
smallest per cent. possible.
The Brush Method consists in ap- plying the creosote like a coat of paint to the lower portion of the post, up to a point six inches above the ground line; the creosote being first heated to one hundred and eighty de- grees Fahrenheit. Two or more coats may be applied time being al- lowed between each application for the creosote to soak into the wood.

To guard against a complete break- down in health tho blood must be kept pure and rich. No other, medj- cine can do this so well as Dr. Wil- liams’ Pink Pills, for they act both on the blood and nerves, restore the appetite and keep every organ toned up. Everyone was speciilating about the explosion in town in the wee small hours of Tuesday morning. | If there was one it was either a sympathatic disturbance due to the puncturing of Medicine Hat’s bubble. or else it was one of Beasley's hot cakes getting swelled on itself, But if-all the Cliffians. slept with thé clear conscience that we do they | wouldn’t hear such awful noises; and besides. we've got a hunch that all those fellows who got to quake- | ing in their boots the other night | must have been on about a three | day’s, protracted jamboree. — Get on the water wagon, boys! }

Medicine Hat is tight there on ' the boosting stuff, too. Their con- veyance in the parade that said ‘*Medicine Hat or Bust’? ought to say ‘‘Boost or Bust,’’. while some of the ball players on. both teams that appeared in the Hat on Dom- inion day might adopt a good- natured ‘‘Boot-it-or-bust’’ motto.
